Losing Job in Houston, Texas

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008
Bob Taylor asked:

What are the Health Insurance Options for People who lose their job in Houston, Texas?

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986 established what is known as COBRA. COBRA is a health insurance that is available to a person who has lost their job. COBRA allows people to remain covered under their former employers insurance plan for 18 months. It is usually the first health insurance coverage a person considers when they lose their job.

Texas has established their own health coverage for employees who lose their jobs and do not qualify for COBRA or are past the 18 month limit. They allow people to be covered for 6 months under their former employers health plan and for those on COBRA, allows them plus 6 months of coverage, past the 18 month limit.

In Houston, Texas residents have a few different options in health insurance when they have lost their job. Equal are four main benefitial options from which to choose. These benefitial options all offer health insurance that people can afford and fairly easy to get.

Another option is the Texas health insurance risk pool. When a person has exhausted any rights under COBRA or Texas continuation rights they can try to the Texas health insurance risk pool. There are some requirements, though for this health insurance plan. A person must have had insurance coverage for the previous 18 months with no break in coverage exceeding 63 days.

Lastly, for those who have exhausted all other options there is the TexCare Partnership. TexCare Partnership offers Texas families health insurance calculated upon the size of the family and their income.

Landscape Design For Homes in Houston Texas

Friday, October 24th, 2008
Jeff Halper asked:

Have you cut out and collected pictures of great landscaping ideas, but now wonder how to actually put them onto your own property? Have you wanted to capture the vision of a stately French mansion on your property in Houston, Texas? Would you like to know whether the plants you’ve admired in European and New England countryside estates will grow on the Texas coastal plains?

If so, you need the services of an experienced residential landscape design professional. A competent landscape designer or landscape architect takes you through the entire design development process, which includes: consultation and program development, analysis of the existing site, conceptual landscaping design, construction documentation and permitting. And then on towards turning the vision in your mind from virtual reality to actual reality.

Landscape design and Analysis of the Site

An essential part of the initial consultation with your landscape designer or landscape architect is a walk around your property. Here is where you get to share your overall vision, detail your wants and needs and desires. It should be a free-flowing discussion about aesthetics, which includes your likes and dislikes of materials, preferences on arrangements-all the “wouldn’t it be nice if…” things you’ve been considering.

Try to be as specific as you can. For example, you may want a deck to seat a party of ten people or a large lawn area on which your three- and five-year-old can play with your Labrador retriever. This detailed information will be brought together by your residential landscape designer or landscape architect to create a program of uses. The program organizes uses by their relationship to one another, much like the inside flow of your home. In fact, the architecture and flow of your home should relate to the architecture and flow of your landscaping. Understanding these relationships and interpreting them well separates the artist-architectural designer from a landscape horticulturalist-contractor.

Residential Landscaping Design

The next step in the design process develops out of the meeting notes, site analysis, program of uses, and the design professional’s experience. At this conceptual level, the landscape designer or landscape architect conveys the overall design intent, such as the general use areas and their sizes, swimming pools and other hardscapes, outdoor kitchens and outdoor fountains, lawn areas, and plantings. This phase will also be the time when it is determined which wish list items are possible on the site and which are not. An overall cost study is developed from the conceptual landscaping design as well.

Moving Forward with you Landscape Design:

Once you have agreed on the overall design intent, sizes of use areas, general material selections and their applications, you are ready to begin the landscaping design development and construction phase. The documentation for this phase can be broken down into three groups: 1) landscaping design drawings for permitting. 2) landscaping design drawings to convey final design intent and material selections for you and the installation contractor 3) landscaping design drawings, called construction documents, with specifications for materials, specifications for their installation and installation methods.

These drawings may be accompanied by a full package of additional drawings to include an existing site survey, tree disposition and elevation plan, tree preservation plan, demolition plan, swimming pool plan, landscape drainage systems, irrigation systems, hardscape plan including outdoor kitchen and outdoor water fountains, landscape planting plan, landscape lighting plan, and construction details for the above plans.

As for permits, each city has its own unique requirements for landscape plan approvals. The norm is a submittal of the entire permitting package to be approved or rejected by a committee board. For this reason, it is important to hire a landscaping company that is fluent in these areas, one who knows what vital information to include, such as lot coverage ratios, engineered drainage plans, pool fencing layout and specifications. It is equally important to omit unnecessary information that could create confusion or send up a red flag that would keep the project from getting approved. A knowledgeable residential landscape designer or landscape architect helps win approval as quickly as possible.

Garden Design and the End Results

Whether your project is a simple landscaping design that only encompasses landscape planting or is a complex construction package, it is vital that you hire a landscape designer or landscape architect that is competent in the skill sets detailed here. For your satisfaction, it is also important to distinguish between off-the-shelf landscaping design and a designer who can reflect your unique style. Always ask to see a portfolio and visit the website to determine if the landscaping company under consideration has the sense of style you appreciate and is one who can design a landscape that complements your home and lifestyle.

Additionally, it is highly recommended that you utilize a landscaping design company that not only does the design work, but also performs project management and landscaping installation. There is a world of difference between someone who has great ideas and another person with great ideas who also knows the availability and best use of local materials, local contractors and their methods of construction, overall cost and budget development, and can then maintain the finished product. In short, you want a landscape designer or landscape architect who can deliver a landscape design solution that flourishes in the Houston climate over the long term.

New Home Builders in Houston Texas Offer Many Styles

Friday, October 24th, 2008
Nick Johnson asked:

For the past two decades, Houston has led the nation in population growth. The growing communities are supported by some of the best new home builders in Houston, Texas - a wide cross section of quality home builders who offer housing in styles to suit just about any family imaginable. Houston and its surrounding metro area has worked hard to channel the growth of residential and commercial property through smart communities - master planned communities that offer all the amenities residents want and need within easy reach of their front doors.

In many areas of the country, planned communities end up looking like cookie cutter communities, with one or two styles predominating and most homes looking just like their neighbors’ houses. Thanks to careful planning and the participation of the top new home builders in Houston, Texas and its metro area, this isn’t the case in Houston subdivisions like Riverstone and Telfair.

Instead, community planners have worked with local builders to create a menu of new home styles, each with flexible options that allow new residents to vary production homes or choose custom homes with many flexible options. This means that in Riverstone, for example, the luxury gated subdivision The Manors offers eight different architectural styles and floor plans for new residents to choose from.

The production homes in other Riverstone subdivisions like Creekstone Village (I and II), Crossing Cove and The Terrace feature homes built by top new home builders in Houston, Texas including Perry, Newmark, Wilshire, Highlands, Ashton Woods, Coventry and Trendmaker. The architectural styles vary and include Country French, Mediterranean, Traditional and Texas Hill Country. There are one and two level home plans available and many homes offer customizable options in materials and floor plans.

For those who want a higher level of customization, Riverstone also features several upscale gated neighborhoods of custom built homes by such noted new home builders in Houston, Texas as Bayou Bend, Sterling Classics and Westport Homes.

Riverstone, one of Houston’s newest subdivisions, is a 3,700 acre master planned subdivision that is currently under development in Sugar Land. The community life will center around over 250 acres of lake and 500 acres of open park land. The upscale luxury community is only about ten percent completed, with new homes being built and planned in several Riverstone subdivisions. The new homes in Riverstone include such sought after amenities as media game rooms, luxury bathrooms, second level decks and outdoor entertaining space.

Residents of Riverstone will also enjoy the outdoors fully with over 28 miles of hiking paths through the forested park lands, as well as lake access for fishing, swimming, boating and other water sports. One of several planned recreation complexes is already open, offering tennis courts and swimming pools, and the community, when complete, will also feature a full golf course with country club and pro shop.

Riverstone offers upscale, luxury living, but it is typical in many ways of the advantages and amenities of living in master planned communities. The lifestyle is family centered, with community activities taking center stage in most community centers. Community calendars include such favorite activities as Father-Daughter dances, potluck suppers, Mother-Son Dances and Family Day at local parks. Some are focused on resort style activities, and include regattas and Concerts in the Park. Recreational facilities offer family swim times in addition to swimming lessons and swim team practices.

Master planned communities like Riverstone offer a comfortable, affordable, luxurious lifestyle in a community that believes in preserving all of its resources. In addition to the other amenities of living in a master planned community in the Houston metro area, children who live in Riverstone attend the award winning schools of the Fort Bend Independent School District. Education and family involvement are very high on the list of priorities for continued development in and around Houston, Fort Bend and Sugar Land.

New homes in master planned communities like Riverstone are affordably priced, with prices starting in the mid-$230s and ranging up to over $1 million for custom built luxury homes in the more exclusive, gated areas. Master planned communities protect property values, and offer high property value appreciation as the development grows and is completed. Property values are expected to remain strong in the Houston area as the community becomes one of the most sought after residential and business locations in the country.

New Homes in Houston, Texas: Build or Buy?

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008
Tim Dillard asked:

In the state of Texas there are many new home builders. In Houston particularly, there are many homes that have already been constructed, and they are often available at very good prices.

Whether a person is looking for new homes or previously built homes; there will be options to choose from. However, a person should take his or her time and look very carefully, because there are good deals and bad deals in Houston. New homes here are abundant, just as there are in almost any area. New homes builders in Houston, Texas know this; and they work to showcase the good deals that they can offer to customers.

The real estate market still remains strong in Houston. New homes in Sugar Land are especially popular, and there are other Texas cities where the population is growing as well. Texas is viewed by many to be one of the best places to live. In America, this state is helping to fuel the housing market.

Houston and Sugar Land are among the top places to live. In Texas, these areas and a few other select cities are experiencing a lot of growth, and it looks like this trend will continue well into the future. For these growing areas and for the people that are moving into them, they must decide whether to build or to buy.

Many people will buy an existing home, because there is usually less time spent waiting to move in. However, not every person will find an existing home that he or she likes, or a location that he or she wants to be in. Because of that, these individuals will have a home built by new home builders.

In Houston, Texas homes are becoming more and more popular. This is, of course, very good for the businesses and economy here, but there are some concerns that the housing market may overbuild and there will be too many new, unoccupied homes in too many areas.

Even with this worry, the housing market in Texas seems very strong. Working hard to bring more people to the state are the new home builders. In Houston, Texas and expanding cities and towns; the creation of new homes are bringing many people here. Along with that, comes increased business for local economies. Whether a person chooses to build or buy, a growing community means a growing economy, which benefits many people.

The west coast offense is the most boring thing to ever happen to the NFL besides non stop commercials. Agree?

Holy crap. I can’t stand to see a team run that. Filled with one screen pass after another. Kind of takes away from the running game. My favorite team the Packers ran this offense when Holmgren was around. It won games and kept Favre in check but it was hard to sit through. My dad and I used to joke about how many screens would be thrown. We would bet on it. I would have even traded a few wins for some excitement. When Favre started letting it fly the last couple of years I actually could stay awake for games. Even if he did have 31 interceptions or something. Run and shoot baby! All hail Warren Moon and the Houston Oilers of the 1980’s! Also tecmo super bowl for favoring the long pass.
